Behind the Movie
Never Enough: Sex, Money, and Parking Garages in San Francisco

I own a condo on Russian Hill in San Francisco, an affluent residential neighborhood with bay views. The “Crookedest Street in the World,” also snakes down Russian Hill. It’s a highly desirable area to live in with one major drawback- there is no place to park.

The story of NEVER ENOUGH: Sex, Money and Parking Garages in San Francisco began when our six unit condo complex failed to obtain a parking garage permit for our basement where there is room enough for eight cars. During the permit process there was death, suggested extortion, failed romance, serious illness, opportunist lawyers and more. It was like watching a Hollywood movie, only this was my life.

Our main opponent was a contemptuous alcoholic, the want-to-be ward boss and ex-president of the Russian Hill Neighborhood Association (RHNA). She had her beautiful protégé send a mean spirited letter to the city asking them to deny our permit. In an attempt to woo the protégé to our side I inferred I would marry her but she said that was immoral.

Completely depressed I finally gave up and stuffed the garage money from my piggy bank into Russian Oil stock. Surprisingly my investment multiplied giving me no excuse but to write and make the movie.

While the real people in this drama are caricatures, I fictionalized them and modified the plot into one about lust, power, greed, and redemption. We filmed it last year using my condo, with still no parking. Meanwhile the ex-president died of cirrhosis of the liver and the beautiful protégé moved from San Francisco to the suburbs adding to the global warming from commuters.

"Never Enough: Sex, Money, and Parking Garages in San Francisco" was workshopped with several support/critique groups at the California Writers Club. A short play consisting of five of the key scenes was directed and Performed at a Berkeley Repertory Theater workshop.

I am currently the president of the Berkeley Branch of the California Writers Club and spent twelve years as a magazine editor. I have a PhD from UCBerkeley and have worked at several high tech companies including Aerojet General and General Electric.
