Subconscious Mind

There has been much discussion recently about our subconscious mind, for example the New York Times, January 2, 2007 had an article “Free Will: Now You Have It Now Don’t”. Neurobiologists have done many experiments that confirm the subconscious typically works a half second before the conscious mind kicks in. In Never Enough: Sex, Money and Parking Garages in San Francisco, we see Sylvia’s subconscious reveal itself in a more literal manner through her dreams and actions. Whether she has free will or not is a discussion for the audience.

While the health of anyone can be influenced by stress and life situations, Sylvia’s health is more directly affected. When she has everything she thinks she wants, she is relatively healthy. When she loses all of those things, money, possessions, men, she also loses her coping mechanisms for stress and becomes deathly ill. What is interesting about Never Enough is that Sylvia’s inner struggle becomes a visualization for the audience. We actually see what is bothering her and how she decides to cope with her situation. This visualization of her subconscious shows her thought process as she decides what she will do and how she will do it.
